I am new to the sports betting world. I am trying to learn how games are capped and what I information I should use when determining a pick. I know the basics.

Could someone please tell me what other information I should look into or give me advice to try and make disciplined and intelligient wagers instead of coin flip choice.

Thank you,

Scott

Letsgohoosiers gave some great advice but I think for those new to sports betting Kelly criterion might be a bit much.I think the standard 2% of bankroll on a wager would be a good starting point for a newbie to sports betting.you then can recalculate your bankroll on winning streaks and adjust your bets as you go.Keep an eye on letsgohoosiers posts.Good stuff

bet the opposite of everyone else,

always get + money on wagers,

concentrate on totals (lower vigs typically),,

bet at Matchbook/5dimes/ betphoenix/betfair/pinnacle

bet 1 bet or less a day.

divide your bankroll into 4sections, Once youve increased your BR 25% increase your bets by 5%.

there are a few ways to attack it. as tater suggested some play a select number of games, risking more. however i prefer to play a high volume of games, risking 1-3% of my bankroll per play. when playing volume you should focus on only betting good numbers. your goal should be to beat the closing line. if you can't get a good number on a game, don't play it. numbers matter much more then the teams playing.
also make sure to look at situations. it's not as easy as just picking the better team. look ahead games, let down games are 2 easy ones.
there is a lot to learn, and it's a grind. be prepared for a lot of failure. even the best gamblers lose just under half the games they play.

You risk 1-3% of your bankroll per play but play around 20 games per day.

If you load up on good numbers (+EV wagers), your bankroll increases.

Kelly structures your bet based on your edge. The better a number you get, the stronger your bet should be.

+3.5 (-105) in football when Pinnacle's expected value is +3 (-110) is a HUGE advantage. This should have a larger percent of your bankroll allocated towards it than +3 (+100).

i get that you bet small if you are betting many times a day but what if you only bet say 100 games a season?

so the kelly pretty much means you bet more when the odds are good?

manfred,,,, lol, brother, your opening a door that is sooo amazingly wrought with pain and suffering,

Listen, all the advice ont his page is VALID, but what hoosiers does takes time, alot of time,,, and experience, HUGE amounts of experience,

so please forgive me hoosiers, but manfred your taking some of the advice out of context,,,

there are a few ways to make money capping sports,,, Hoosiers way is one, my way is one,, there are many ways,

You need to HONE in the one way YOU can win,,, you gotta do your research, and continue to ask questons, but please, you gotta know what I DO, and what hoosiers does, are 2 DIFFERENT things:toast:,

we both "win" but with different strategies,

good luck,,

Unless you can go over to Hoosiers or Icemans home and stay with him 24 hours a day for a year, Yes. because it will take you that long to really understand what they do.

find a few guys on here that handicap the same way you do, and follow them/befriend them. Then you will be able to craft your style.

This is the best and most accurate advice I can give you. If you ever see a book with a # that is different than everyone else, JUMP on it, no matter who it is. Even if you don't like the game. If the book bumps its favorite, take the dog. If the book bumps the over, jump on the under. Trust me folks, this works like magic. Let the book make your pick, not you.
